Supplement Medicare: Did You Know That You Can Supplement Medicare?
Medicare is essential when you are approaching retirement age. But are you aware that you can supplement your Medicare coverage with additional coverage, which is also known as Medigap? The term Medigap is just that, it is gap insurance that helps cover health care costs that Original Medicare won’t such as, co-payments, coinsurance and deductibles. This coverage is valuable to you when it comes to getting the care you need when you need it without the worry of health care costs. When you are 65 you are eligible for Medicare coverage. In addition on the first day of the month that you turn 65 and are enrolled in Medicare Part B you can buy a supplement Medigap insurance policy.
When you supplement your Medicare coverage with Medigap insurance, Medicare will pay for their portion of approved amounts and then your Medigap policy will pay for its share. Medicare will not pay for the cost of you getting a supplemental insurance policy.
In most states insurance companies will sell you a standardized Medigap policy, which means that regardless of who you purchase your policy through you will get the same basic benefits. The only difference in supplemental Medicare coverage, depending on whom you purchase you coverage through will be the cost. Once again, the benefits are exactly the same for Medigap policies with the same letter.
You may be in a situation where you are in great health and don’t feel the need for supplement Medicare coverage, which is great news. But be aware, should you want to enroll after the open enrollment period has ended you will have to meet the medical underwriting requirements which means that you may not be eligible if you don’t meet these requirements. Even if you are in great health, the best time to get your supplement Medicare coverage is during the open enrollment phase. If you aren’t in good health and you apply for Medigap coverage you have guaranteed issue right, which is also called Medigap Protection. This means that the insurance company cannot use any pre-existing health condition waiting periods so you won’t have to worry in the future should your health start to decline. So it makes sense to enroll in a supplement Medicare program as soon as you are eligible for Medicare Part B. Remember, without Medicare Part B you cannot get a Medigap supplement policy.
