Supplemental Insurance:  What Is Senior Supplemental Insurance?

If you are 65 or fast approaching it you may already know Medicare supplemental insurance is.  However, there may be some that have no idea what this type of insurance is. Let’s take a look at this very important type of insurance and how it will directly affect you and the type of health coverage you receive once you reach retirement age.  Once you understand the program you will be able to make a decision about your health care coverage that will fit your needs and give you the benefits that are just right for you.

Medicare is health insurance for people 65 or older and is available to those under 65 that have certain disabilities.  Medicare Supplemental insurance or Medigap as it is also referred to as, is designed to supplement or help pay some of the costs for health care that Original Medicare does not cover, hence “gap insurance”.  Some of the costs that a supplemental policy will cover are co-payments, coinsurance and deductibles.    Supplemental insurance or Medigap is standardized in most states. What this means is that each supplemental insurance policy offers the same basic benefits regardless of what insurance company sells it. The Medigap policies are lettered A through N.  The only difference may be the cost of the insurance from one insurance company to the next depending on the letter.  Once again, they have the same basic benefits so be sure to shop around to get the best policy rate.

Getting Supplemental Insurance coverage can be a bit confusing if you don’t have all the facts.  In order to get supplemental or Medigap coverage you must have Medicare part A and part B.  In addition to the monthly premium you pay for Medicare you will also have a monthly premium for your supplemental insurance policy.  If you and your spouse are both on Medicare you each need to purchase separate supplemental insurance policies.  The best time to get your supplemental insurance policy is during the open enrollment period, which begins on the first day of the month that you are 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B.  It is important to purchase your policy during open enrollment because the insurance company cannot deny you coverage even if you have health problems.  If you apply for supplemental insurance coverage after the open enrolled period there is not guarantee that you will get the coverage you need.

  • Helps cover doctor services and outpatient care.
  • Helps cover some preventive services to help maintain a person’s health and to keep certain illnesses from getting worse.
  • Generally pays 80% of the Medicare-approved amount for covered services

Medicare Part C
(Medicare Advantage Plans)

  • A way to get Medicare benefits through private companies approved by and under contract with Medicare.
