South Dakota Car Insurance

If you own a registered car in South Dakota you must carry at least the minimum amount of liability car insurance to be legal when driving down any public road. There are several different ways you can show proof of financial responsibility if needed. You can show: your liability car insurance policy, a certificate of deposit to your state treasurer for $50,000, a certificate of self-insurance(if you have more than 26 vehicles), or have a surety company bond. Your liability car insurance must have 25/50/25 coverage if you were to have an accident. Keep in mind though, even though you have liability car insurance in South Dakota, this may not be enough coverage if you were to cause a major accident. Many car insurance agents will recommend you to purchase more coverage. The state of South Dakota also wants all drivers to carry uninsured motorist and under-insured motorist coverage, as well as, the same amount of personal injury protection, to be legal while driving. You are required by the state to carry proof of car insurance with you at all times, and also carry a copy of proof in your vehicle, so you know where they are located at all times. You must show proof when asked by a law enforcement officer any time they ask, and when you register you vehicle. If you are questioning the proper documentation of what is proper car insurance identification, you can show your liability car insurance identification card that states your name, address, description of your vehicle, car insurance company name and policy number, you can also show your certificate of deposit with your state Treasurer, or your self insurance certificate.

If you fail to carry and show proof of car insurance in the state of South Dakota, you can lose your drivers license from 30 days to up to one year. You can also face time in jail, and hefty fines to pay. Also, you will have to file an SR—22 with the state for up to 3 years. This form is designed to allow the state to know when you do and do not have proper car insurance coverage. If you are caught without having car insurance proof after this, you will face more penalties. Let's say you sell your vehicle after you had a bad run-in and think you don't need car insurance since you don't have a vehicle. Wrong. You must still submit an SR-22 under a non-owners policy and you will still be required to pay your monthly non-owners car insurance. If you lose your license, and it has expired, not only will you have to pay to have your license reinstated, you will have to take the required tests again to have your drivers license back.
