Pennsylvania Car Insurance

Drivers are required by law to carry a minimum amount of liability car insurance that covers 15/30/5 in the event of an accident. If you don't want to purchase a car insurance policy, you can purchase a certificate of financial responsibility with the state. Once you have purchased your car insurance, you will be mailed an identification card, that you can make copies of and keep with you and in your vehicle at all times. If you are caught driving without proper car insurance coverage you can be faced with a $300 fine, your drivers license being suspended for 3 months and another $50 fine, your registration being suspended that adds another $50 fine, and having your vehicle could be banned from being driven by anyone for that 3 month period.

Here are a few reminders for you to keep in mind while you are thinking about where to purchase your car insurance coverage in Pennsylvania, or whether or not to purchase a financial responsibility certificate as opposed to car insurance.

  1. Just because you are stopped by a law enforcement officer, is not the only way you can get busted for not having valid car insurance. Once your car insurance is terminated, a letter will be sent to your local DOT, and then you will receive a letter. If you fail to respond to the letter from the DOT your drivers license could become suspended without you ever even knowing.
  2. When you take your vehicle to have it inspected once a year, and you fail to show valid car insurance coverage, the inspection place will notify your local DOT, which in turn, will send you a notification in the mail that you must respond too.
  3. You must have a valid car insurance policy to register your vehicle annually.
