Maryland Car Insurance

To be a legal driver in Maryland you must have at least the minimum amount of car insurance to be able to drive down any public road. Since there are a high congestion rate in the main cities of this state, the odds of you being involved in an accident are higher than in other area. The minimum limits are as follows: $20,000 per person for bodily injury, $40,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $15,000 per accident for property. Here is a breakdown of what these numbers should mean to you. The first number, $20,000, is what your car insurance company will pay per person injured in an accident you caused. The second number, $40,000, is tied into the first number for a total payout in each accident. So, if you cause an accident with more than two parties, those two parties will have to battle to see who your insurance will pay for. If that $40,000 does not pay out enough money for the damages you incurred you may be faced going to court to settle the difference. The last number, $15,000, reflect the amount of coverage that will be paid for property damages such as to another house, garage, light pole, or buildings that you might have damaged in your accident.

Living in Maryland you must carry uninsured motorist coverage as well. This way if you are ever involved in an accident with someone that does not have any car insurance coverage at all, you will not have to worry about coming out empty handed, nor will your Maryland car insurance company. The same minimum amounts, 20/40/15. Personal Injury Protection coverage is also sought out by many drivers in Maryland even though it is not yet required. This gives drivers a little more “cushion” to fall back on in the event you are injured in an accident and are unable to return to work for a while. If you are caught driving in Maryland without car insurance coverage, your drivers license can be suspended and you might even face hefty fines and possible jail time for not abiding by the state laws. If your Maryland car insurance happens to be canceled for non-payment you could be subject to a fine of $150 for the first 30 days, then $7 a day for each day afterwards, until you have secured a car insurance policy in Maryland.
